TECHEETAH CLAIMS FIRST FORMULA E WIN IN SEASON FINALE

Jean-Eric Vergne claimed his first Formula E win, and the debut victory for the TECHEETAH Formula E Team, in a tense finale to the 2016/17 FIA Formula E season.

Having secured the team’s tenth SuperPole appearance of the year earlier in the day, Vergne drove a magnificent race, challenging for the lead from the off before making P1 his own on Lap 29. With five per cent greater energy efficiency than his rivals around him, Vergne delivered a drama-free victory and built on the back-to-back double podiums that TECHEETAH has delivered in consecutive weekends.

Meanwhile, his teammate, Stéphane Sarrazin, had a more eventful race after being spun at the first corner on the opening lap. Despite running at the back of the field after the incident, Sarrazin fought hard through the field, gaining a total of 12 positions to claim P8 and further points for the team at the chequered flag.

Today’s result means that TECHEETAH ends the season in P5 in the Team Standings, with a total of 156 points – a significant achievement in the Chinese team’s debut season. In addition, the SECA team secured seven podiums and 10 SuperPole appearances along the way.

Mark Preston, Team Principal of TECHEETAH, commented: “We have been challenging for a victory all season, and this moment is the culmination of a lot of hard work from everyone at the team.”

“We have consistently been in a position to take a win, and to finally do so is a great feeling. I want to thank all our partners, sponsors and fans who have been with us throughout the season, with special thanks to Renault for providing an exceptional powertrain. Finally I want to thank JEV for delivering this victory. We can’t wait to come back and fight for more wins next year.”

Jean-Eric Vergne, commented: “Finally! I am so happy to have brought home my first win in Formula E to my new team. We have made great gains in recent races, with Steph and I claiming two double podiums, but to end the season with a win couldn’t be any better and puts us in a great position for next year.”

Stephane Sarrazin, commented: “That was a very eventful race! I was tagged on the opening lap and had to push hard to come back through the field, but the car felt great and got stronger as the race wore on, allowing me to push as others slowed.

“I am very happy to deliver yet more points for the team, want to congratulate the team for a fantastic job and JEV on his first victory. I want to thank them for the opportunities that they have given me since I joined, and for the podium finishes in both New York and Montreal.”

The fourth season of the FIA Formula E Championship will commence in Hong Kong on 2nd December this year, racing in 11 countries around the world.
